Change in Grading Scale - Questions and Answers

The following is a list of questions and answers related to the elimination of passing grades below 1.0.

Q:

Last year I attended another college and earned a 0.9 in a business class I want to count toward my accounting certificate. Since this is not for a transfer degree, can I still transfer this class to Edmonds Community College?

A:

No. Effective summer quarter 2012, Edmonds no longer accepts any course with a grade below 1.0.

Q:

The Financial Aid office told me that I could not repeat a history class I passed with a 0.7 and receive funding. Now this class will not count toward my transfer degree. What are my options?

A:

New federal financial aid regulations may now allow you to repeat a class one time for a better grade. Check with the Financial Aid Office to see if you now qualify for additional funding.

Q:

I do not want to repeat the math class I received a 0.9 in several years ago. Can I take another class to complete my transfer degree requirements?

A:

Yes, you may. However, you will need a 2.0 if you are planning to take a higher level math course. If you have questions regarding which classes fulfill the requirement you need, please contact advising at advising@edcc.edu.

Q:

I am not working on a transfer degree, but expect to complete an ATA in Construction Management this spring. The class I received a 0.8 in is required for my ATA. Will I need to repeat the class to graduate?

A:

No. Students completing a professional/technical associates degree or certificate may still use previous grades of less than a 1.0 for graduation.

Q:

I am a part time student and will not complete my AA transfer degree until the end of fall quarter 2013. A year ago I received a 0.9 in a required science class. Can I still receive my degree and graduate?

A:

No. You will have to retake this course for a higher grade or take a different class to fulfill the requirement.

Q:

I have switched my degree from an AA to an AS degree in Chemistry. Will the 0.7 I earned in English 101 keep me from graduating?

A:

Yes. You must have a 2.0 in English 101 in any transfer degree in order to take English 102. The English department requires a 2.0 in English 101 in order to take English 102, which is a required course for both an AA or AS degree.

Q:

I plan to transfer to a university in California. If I am unable to complete my AA transfer degree because of my 0.7 in English, can I still transfer my credits to the university?

A:

Yes. However, you should contact the university you plan to transfer to for information about their transfer requirements and grading policies. Universities outside of Washington state do not follow the guidelines of the Direct Transfer Agreement.

Q:

If I repeat the two classes I received a 0.9 and 0.7 in, can these grades be removed from my transcript?

A:

These courses will not be removed from your transcript. However, once you have repeated the course, you are advised to submit a Course Repeat form to Enrollment Services. The college will then adjust your transcript so that only the most recent grade is calculated into your overall GPA. Both grades will remain on your transcript but only the most recent course will count toward your GPA (Please note: In order to submit the Course Repeat form, the most recent grade received must be higher than the first grade). For more information about our Course Repeat policy, please see Repeating a Course  in the Student Grades section of our Academic Information and Requirements.
