Explores from multiple perspectives late 19th and early 20th century women’s writings and the controbersies they addressed, such as birth control, sexual identity, marriage, motherhood, madness, education, employment, voting rights, etc. Prerequisite: Placement in ENGL 100 or instructor’s permission.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of literary concepts by identifying and describing the formal elements, techniques, and genres of modernist literary works. [REASON]
Reason clearly by applying critical-reading methods/theories to modernist texts in order to analyze their major features and develop plausible, supportable interpretations. [REASON]
Describe and analyze ways that modernist texts shaped and were shaped by cultural/historical contexts and trends. [EXPLORE]
Support analysis and interpretation of modernists literary texts by locating, using and citing relevant textual and contextual evidence. [REASON]
Describe how modernist women writers contributed to the literature of the Modernist Era. [EXPLORE]
