Examines counseling theories such as person-centered, behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic, existential, Gestalt, systems, and brief. Includes opportunity to evaluate theories and techniques based on individual career goals.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and methods underlying contemporary counseling theories, including person-centered, behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic, systems, and brief approaches.
Compare and contrast counseling theories to identify common elements and significant differences in how service is provided to clients.
Formulate questions relevant to selecting appropriate methods for use with a variety of clients in different treatment settings.
Develop, articulate, and provide rationale for one’s own theory and practice base relevant to specific populations in the area of human services.
