SHS 117 - Crisis Intervention
3.0 Credits Introduces theory and practice of crisis intervention. Includes history, stages and goals of crisis intervention, types of crises, suicide assessment and intervention, compassion fatigue; methods of resolving crisis. Meets state suicide training requirements. Prerequisite SHS 114. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify stressors, challenges, and other factors that are likely to precipitate a crisis state.
- Explain the stages, process, and goals of crisis intervention.
- Demonstrate active listening skills that would be needed in a crisis situation.
- Describe and demonstrate the skills needed to collect and analyze relevant information about a person in crisis.
- Identify key risk factors associated with suicide and the warning signs of suicidal intent.
- Describe the effects of crisis intervention on the human service worker.
