LEGAL 224 - Medical Paralegal Law
4.0 Credits
Course covers substantive law and procedures related to medical-legal issues and its application to multiple venues, including law firms, hospitals, insurance companies, consulting firms, governmental agencies, and health care systems. Emphasis is placed on medical record review, case analysis, standards of care, assessment of damages, report writing, and ethical issues.
Prerequisite LEGAL 200 or instructor permission.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the substantive law relating to medical-legal issues, including what is meant by “standard of care” and its impact on legal issues.
- Understand the various aspects of investigation, discovery, and trial preparation, including locating pertinent standards and policies and obtaining medical records.
- Conduct factual and legal research in medical-legal matters and effectively communicate the results of such research.
- Analyze and summarize medical documents and records for use in legal matters, and identify potential issues that affect damages assessment.
- Communicate the results of medical research and factual evidence by drafting reports, including timelines, chronologies, and briefs.
- Evaluate, Identify, and locate other supportive litigation associates to assist with case development, such as legal nurse consultants, life care planners, and expert witnesses.
- Apply the ethical rules and standards of practice to the role of a medical paralegal and develop a framework for resolving ethical dilemmas.
- Apply knowledge, awareness, and/or skills to identify and analyze issues related to diversity.
