MUSC& 142 - Music Theory II



5.0 Credits
Introduces four-part writing using triads in root position, first inversion, and second inversion. Aural skills include modes, seventh chords, inverted triads, and simple melodic and harmonic dictation.
Prerequisite MUSC& 141 with a minimum grade of 2.0 or instructor permission.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Write in 4-part chorale style using triads in root position, first inversion, and second inversion.
  2. Analyze 4-part chorale style writing, and locate spelling, spacing, doubling and voice-leading errors.
  3. Draw from memory the diagrams of usual harmonic progressions, and create harmonic progressions that follow the diagrams.
  4. Harmonize a melody in 4-part chorale style.
  5. Identify and label phrases, cadences, and periods in written music.
  6. Identify and notate the following by ear: triads in inversion; five types of seventh chords in root position; conjunct melodies; melodies with simple skips from the tonic and dominant triads; harmonic progressions of two chords in major and minor keys.
  7. Sight-sing examples with the following parameters: simple and compound time signatures; major and minor keys; stepwise melodies and skips from the tonic and dominant triads.
  8. Play the following on piano: five types of seventh chords in root position; scales and modes; diatonic triads in major and minor; all part-writing assignments; 4-part voicings of triads, and triads in inversion.
