Tree fruit production for the urban garden to small farm,focusing on cultivar selection, cultural requirements, propagation, planting, pruning, and management, with specific attention to heritage fruit tree restoration. Students practice techniques at the on campus garden. Be prepared to arrive and depart from field trip sites on your own. S/U grade option.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Identify and select bioregionally appropriate tree fruit cultivars and rootstock, and manage their site specific growth and cultural requirements.
Discuss cultivar physiology and the limiting factors to growth, such as soil conditions, pollination, and pestiferous organisms.
Demonstrate tree fruit whip grafting propagation, bare root planting, and winter pruning and training techniques while managing limiting factors.
Practice pruning heritage fruit trees, and discuss the significance of fruit tree and orchard restoration within the context of sustainable food systems.
Apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other pest control techniques to maintain cultivar health, vigor, and productivity.
