AHE 193 - Infection Prevention and Control
2.0 Credits Course covers industry regulations and established practices used for central sterile processing. Topics include an overview of federal agencies and professional organizations; the principles of asepsis, personal hygiene, and attire; managing the spread of bacteria and elements of transmission; and the chain of infection. Prerequisite AHE 110, AHE 116, and HCA104 with a minimum grade of 2.0. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:- Explain the importance of infection control practices in maintaining the safety of health care professionals, patients and other in the health care environment.
- Identify common pathogens found in the medical setting and the precautionary measures health care workers take to minimize the risk of contracting diseases.
- Identify industry regulations and best practice standards common in the sterile processing field and the organizations responsible for setting the regulations and standards.
- Explain the chain of infection and how to disrupt it to prevent the spread of disease.
- Define aseptic technique and describe aseptic techniques used in Central Sterile Processing.
