Family Support Studies - Family Support Core Certificate

Program Description The Family Support Core Certificate offers students certification upon completion of the core courses in the Family Support Program. Designed for practitioners working in the field to meet educational standards for Family Support competencies.

Family Support Studies is a unique program at the college which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working with individuals and their families using Family Support practice and principles. The approach nurtures healthy development of families by looking at strengths, connecting families to community resources, and supporting and empowering parents to become advocates for their families.

The program is designed to bring individuals from diverse disciplines together in a common study of family support principles and practices. Students have found employment in various fields of interest including: health, education, and human service agencies.

The certification is an abbreviated certificate awarded upon completion of the core courses in Family Support.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 25 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall. Note applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Courses may be taken in any sequence.
Special Topic Family Support Studies (FSS) classes may substitute for these program requirements with faculty adviser approval. CD indicates cultural diversity designation

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Program Requirements for this degree/certificate, students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate adherence to and familiarity with the nine principles of Family Support.
  • Describe how they apply family support practices in their program or agency.
  • Demonstrate effective strategies that build upon the strengths of each family and empowerment strategies to advocate for the healthy growth of their children and their adult and aging family members.
  • Identify local, regional and state services are available to families and how to access these services.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership skills and identify natural leaders in their community.
  • Describe partnerships and strengthen communities to engage and support families.
