Occupational Safety and Health - Construction Safety Technician Certificate

Program Description The Occupational Safety and Health Construction Safety certificate was developed due to the high demand for trained professionals in this field. This certificate program provides education and training for individuals currently working in the construction field and for students desiring to work with national and state workplace safety and health standards in the construction industry.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Certificate is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 54 credits in General Requirements, Distribution Requirements, and Specified Requirements outlined on the program requirement sheet. A minimum of 30 credits or one- third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Transfer of Credit Non-OSH credits may transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-OSH requirements. To transfer non-OSH credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college Enrollment Services office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Students are advised to

  • Consult with an OSH faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to, and review specific admission requirements.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall. Note applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Program Learning Requirements for this degree, students will be able to:

  • Ability to think critically about historical and current political and social trends surrounding the profession of occupational safety and health.
  • Awareness of diversity issues that affect historical and current trends as well as their affect on the communication and training process of diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through writing, presentation, training and through daily interaction with others.
  • Comprehension of and commitment to best practices in sustainability and global consciousness.
  • Ability to utilize basic computation skills necessary to support the above basic skill set.
  • Promote a culture of health and safety within organizations by communicating to workers and management about risks and hazards, training workers how to avoid accidents and how to protect themselves and others.
  • Reduce harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public by identifying hazardous conditions/practices and implementing corrective measures.
  • Collect data on work environments at construction sites for on-going analysis that may predict risks and hazards.
  • Conduct job site inspections and determine which areas may not be in compliance with State and Federal laws and/or company policies.
  • Maintain complete safety and health records as required by law and by company policy and preparing reports that may be used in legal proceeding and financial planning.
  • Exhibit a basic understanding of the format, organization and function of architectural drawings and specifications.
  • Utilize construction documents to pre-plan for construction job site safety.
  • Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of typical construction materials and methods.
  • Utilize various WAC Safety Standards as a resource for developing site specific safety plans.
  • Career Management: Demonstrate the ability to research employment opportunities, prepare an effective employment package, and present oneself positively in a job interview.
