Program Description Family Support Studies is a unique program which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working or desiring to work with individuals and their families using family support practice and principles. This associate in arts (AA) degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to the Washington State University’s Human Development program. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 93 credits as outlined.

Communication Skills (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.
Human Relations and Professional Development Skills (10 credits)

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze and solve problems.
Cultural Diversity Skills

Program Requirements (23-24 credits)
OUTCOMES:
- Apply the principles of family support and demonstrate best practices in human services, education, or prevention program settings.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively work with individuals using communication skills, group interaction, problem solving, and ethical procedures.
- Identify local, regional, and state services that are available to families and individuals.
- Apply knowledge of community collaborations and identify barriers to services.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and techniques, including empowering others to become natural leaders in the community.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of family systems and governmental, social, and political systems that affect families.
Program Notes
The program code for this degree is WSHD. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.
- With this AA degree and all admission requirements, students will qualify for junior standing on acceptance into the program. WSU offers a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development on the Pullman and Vancouver campuses and through WSU Online. With this articulation, it is possible for students to earn a four-year degree in human development that recognizes the Family Support Studies courses as a minor concentration through access to Edmonds CC and distance degree programs.
- Admission Requirement to Washington State University’s Human Development Program All students who intend to transfer to WSU should talk with a university advisor to review specific admission requirements. Students must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to WSU. See WSU transfer courses equivalency guidelines.

*General Education Requirements Notes
- Human Relations and Professional Development Skills: For your last three credits you may choose any combination of PE courses, HLTH 100, or HLTH 105.
- Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills: WSU recommends MATH& 107, 146, or PHIL& 120 be taken for your Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning requirement.
**Distribution Requirements Notes: A maximum of 10 credits in any one department/discipline may be included in the 45 distribution credits.
- Humanities: Complete one of the Communication Studies courses below and select 10 credits from at least two other departments within this distribution area. A maximum of five (5) credits in Performance/Skills courses and five (5) credits in foreign language may be applied.
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics: At least 10 credits of Natural Science classes are required, five of which must be a laboratory science. WSU recommends NUTR& 101. (Laboratory science courses are marked with an asterisk on the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distribution Course List.) Computer Science, Mathematics, and Philosophy classes are not Natural Science classes. They are listed under Other Courses.
- Social Sciences: WSU recommends PSYC& 100 and SOC& 101 be taken for the Social Sciences Distribution requirement.
Associate in Arts General Information
Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds CC’s four General Education Outcomes (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.
Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets page.
Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.
Students Are Advised To:
- Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
- Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
- At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
Transferring to Another University or College
- Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
- Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
