Horticulture - Sustainable Agriculture Education - Urban Agriculture: Crop Production Certificate

Program Description This certificate provides a theoretical foundation in urban agriculture through the study of sustainability principles, ecology in agricultural systems, and plant and soil sciences. There is also a focus on the knowledge, skills, and techniques to cultivate urban food crops for year round organic production and seasonal harvests in the maritime climate of the Puget Sound bioregion. This certificate may be combined with the Urban Agriculture: Whole Systems Certificate to complete the larger, Urban Agriculture Systems Certificate.

Credit/Grade Requirements This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 28 credits as outlined. A minimum of 10 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Students Are Advised To

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
  • Communicate with an academic adviser, and
  • Submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Program Requirements (28-30 credits)


  • Identify and discuss the components and production attributes of horticulture and agroecology.
  • Describe the general morphology, internal anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, and ecology of flowering vascular plants.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of soil origin, formation, and ecology in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Use appropriate tools, techniques, and technology to determine nutritional needs and soil amendments for various crop production situations.
  • Utilize polycultural, biointensive field and containerized cropping systems to sustainably propagate, organize, plant, cultivate, and harvest organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers.
