Culinary Arts - Associate in Applied Science-T Degree Transfer to Bachelor of Applied Science in Hospitality Management at South Seattle College

Program Description The Culinary Arts Associate in Applied Science-T Degree is a program designed for students entering the hospitality industry or changing careers and who are interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 116 credits as outlined.

Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds CC certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

General Education Requirements (13 credits)

Communication Skills (5 credits)

OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.

Human Relations and Professional Development Skills (3 credits)

OUTCOME: Act responsibly in applying professional and academic standards associated with personal wellness; sustainable management of resources; and/or with success in educational, workplace, community, and team settings.

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)

OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.

Cultural Diversity Skills

OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings.

Humanities (10 credits)

OUTCOME: Use humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.

Note: One course should meet the five-credit Cultural Diversity requirement.

Social Sciences (5 credits)

OUTCOME: Use social science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements (88 credits)


  1. Apply concepts and methods of operations for a foodservice establishment.
  2. Communicate culinary information effectively using a variety of formats for a variety of audiences.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of world issues and how they relate to the hospitality industry.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to solve problems individually and in a team environment.
  5. Demonstrate the appropriate use of restaurant industry equipment.
  6. Apply for a direct transfer to South Seattle College’s Bachelor’s of Hospitality Management program.

Program Notes

The program code for this degree is 850W. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • Students must earn a 2.0 or higher in all Culinary Arts classes to successfully earn this degree or certificate.
  • This associate in applied science-T (AAS-T) degree is a professional-technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer as well as professional technical courses. This degree is accepted at South Seattle College as a direct transfer degree into their Bachelor’s of Applied Science (BAS) Degree in Hospitality Management.   • Transfer of Credit Non-culinary arts credits will transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-culinary arts requirements. To transfer credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college registration office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.
  • Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider an associate of arts or an associate of science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

* General Education Requirement Notes

  • Human Relations and Professional Development Skills: South Seattle College - Bachelor of Applied Science in Hospitality Management Degree requires students to complete 1,000 hours of practical experience to graduate, 360 hours (12 credits) can be completed at Edmonds CC.
  • Cultural Diversity Skills: A CD designated course is not specified as a requirement for this degree; students should choose a course from the Course List - Humanities Distribution Courses  to meet both a Humanities Distribution requirements and the Cultural Diversity Skills requirement. Cultural diversity designation is indicated with a :CD in the course title.

** Distribution Requirement Note

  • Humanities: Ten (10) credits in Humanities are required and should be selected from the Humanities Distribution Course list (see Cultural Diversity Skills note above). Choices must include at least two different departments. A maximum of five (5) credits in foreign language may be applied to the Humanities requirement.

Associate in Applied Science-Transfer General Information

Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds CC’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.   

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Transferring to Another University or College

  • Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
  • Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
