Computer Information Systems - Business Systems Analyst Advanced Certificate

This advanced certificate emphasizes a systems approach to understanding and solving business problems specifically related to the acquisition or development of information systems. The core courses introduce students to a variety of methods and tools for understanding problems and identifying system requirements.

This certificate will prepare students for a variety of roles that require the ability to research problems, gather requirements, document system specifications and make recommendations for information systems. Upon completion of this certificate students may be qualified for the following jobs:

• Systems Analyst
• Business Analyst
• Programmer Analyst
• Technical Writer
• Information Technology Analyst
• Business Requirements Analyst
• IT Project Manager

Entry Requirements This certificate begins at an advanced level and is design for students already in the IT field. Students entering this program will need to complete a portfolio of prior learning by taking CIS 116 . The portfolio will be used to waive entry-level courses and place students in the appropriate advanced courses. Please see a CIS faculty adviser for more information.

Certificate Requirements This certificate is awarded upon a student’s completion of a minimum of 41 credits of Program Requirements as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 within the program requirements. Students planning to continue on to two-year degrees should plan ahead while working toward their certificate. For a smooth transition from certificate to degree, students should see a CIS adviser at their earliest opportunity.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.
