Academic Information and Requirements – Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress is defined as achieving a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) for each quarter of enrollment. The college also monitors the completion of courses students attempt to take each quarter.

The policy applies to all enrolled students – see exceptions below*. Students who do not maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress may be placed on Academic Concern, Academic Restriction, or Academic Suspension status.

Academic Concern

Students who do not maintain a minimum 2.0 quarterly GPA will be placed on Academic Concern. Students on Academic Concern will be contacted via EdMail and encouraged to take advantage of available campus resources to improve their academic standing. Academic Concern status will be removed once a student has satisfactorily completed a subsequent quarter of enrollment.

Academic Restriction

Students on Academic Concern, who again fall below a minimum 2.0 quarterly GPA, will be placed on Academic Restriction. Students on Academic Restriction will have a hold placed on their registration. Students must submit an appeal via the Academic Success Plan . Appeals are subject to approval by advisors in Academic Advising.

Academic Suspension

Students on Academic Restriction, who again fall below a minimum 2.0 quarterly GPA, will be placed on Academic Suspension for a period of one year. Students on Academic Suspension will have a hold placed on their registration. Students are required to meet with an academic advisor once they have submitted a letter of appeal. The letter should explain and document why they were unable to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Appeals are reviewed and subject to approval by advisors in Academic Advising. Academic Suspension will be removed for students who successfully appeal and satisfactorily complete a subsequent quarter of enrollment.

Completion of Attempted Credits

The college monitors the completion of credits students attempt to take each quarter. Grades of V (unofficial withdrawal), W (official withdrawal), and U (unsatisfactory) will count as attempted credits. Such grades can impact a student’s satisfactory academic progress. Grades of “I” (incomplete) are not counted as attempted credits and are not included as part of this policy.

*Exceptions: Students participating in some special enrollment programs, which include financial aid, Running Start, International Student Services, EdCAP, and High School Completion, will need to meet the academic standards and completion requirements of those programs. Students should also be aware that some other campus programs have additional academic progress standards that must be maintained as a requirement of participation.

Student Progress System - Early Alert

Throughout the quarter, instructors may notify Academic Advising about students who are not maintaining satisfactory academic progress or attending classes regularly. Resources and services may be provided to help these students successfully complete courses.
