CS 101 - Computing Concepts
Maximum of 5.0 possible Credits
A broad beginning-level survey of computer science concepts. Topics include history of computing, computer hardware, operating systems, programming logic, Internet, data management, overview of programming languages and concepts, and social context and ethics of computing (was CMPSC 101). Prerequisite: MATH 090 , MATH 095 , or CIS 114 with a grade of at least 2.0, placement above MATH 095 , or instructor permission.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain machine representation of data and convert data into different number systems. [REASON]
- Differentiate between procedural and object-oriented paradigms. [REASON]
- Understand how to find, evaluate and process information from the Internet. [REASON]
- Apply problem-solving skills with valid logical reasoning to solve various problems, not all necessarily computer related. [REASON]
- Describe the strengths and weaknesses of different operating systems. [REASON]
- Describe the basic components of computer systems and their interactions. [COMMUNICATE]
- Explain the differences and similarities among current computer languages. [COMMUNICATE]
- Explain issues in computer ethics. [EXPLORE]
- Work cooperatively in small groups to practice problem-solving techniques. [COMMUNICATE]
