PHIL& 101 - Introduction to Philosophy

A critical study of the work of a few major philosophers, and the fundamental issues of philosophy; may include human nature, ethical theory, justice and political philosophy, the nature and extent of knowledge, and the nature of self and being (was PHIL 100).

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Define main branches of Philosophy: Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Aesthetics. [REASON]
Define basic terms of: Metaphysics (being, reality), Epistemology (truth, knowledge), Ethics (right, wrong, good, evil), Aesthetics (the beautiful, the ugly). [REASON]
Identify and analyze different metaphysical theories: Monism, Dualism, Pluralism, Materialism, Spiritualism, Pantheism. [REASON]
Identify and analyze basic epistemological concepts: Empiricism, Rationalism, Realism, Idealism. [REASON]
Identify and analyze fundamental ethical theories: Objectivism, Relativism, Subjectivism, Naturalism, Intuitionism. [REASON]
Define and identify different modes of scientific inquiry: deduction (syllogism, mathematical reasoning, definitions), induction (generalization, analogy, causal inference). [REASON]
Identify the distinction and correlation between Ontology and Logic. [REASON]
