Integrate the family and community context in which a child develops. Explore cultures and demographics of families in society, community resources, and strategies for involving families in the education of their child and tools for effective communication. S/U grade option.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Evaluate and describe the cultural influences, social issues, changes and transitions that affect children, families, schools, and communities.
Identify and describe influences on children’s development and socialization process.
Analyze strategies that empower families to establish and maintain collaborative relationships to support the growth and development of children.
Identify how one’s own family history and life experiences may impact relationships with children and families.
Identify community resources and create strategies for connecting children and families to those resources.
Describe strategies for engaging families in their children’s learning and development.
Demonstrate ability to develop environments that reflect family and community diversity and prevent bias.
Discuss the teacher’s role in social-emotional learning in utilizing communication to gain understanding of children and their thoughts and feelings; encourage children’s verbal expression; and strengthen communication among children.
