BSTEC 206 - Electronic Health Records

Introduction to the electronic health record in various health care settings; structure, content, uses, and basic processing procedures for health records in acute and ambulatory care settings with emphasis on electronic health records (EHR) and practice management applications. Instructor permission is required if prerequisites have not been met.
Prerequisite BSTEC 104; BSTEC 129 or BSTEC 130 or CIS 100.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Identify various types of health care delivery systems, settings, providers, and allied health professionals in the United States.
Differentiate between licensure, certification, and accreditation.
Identify the functions of the Health Information Management (HIM) Department within the health care facility.
Describe the role of health records in medical coding and billing.
Identify and evaluate health record data sources and collection tools.
Identify and describe the content, structure, use, storage, retrieval, and destruction of health information.
Identify, define, and apply health data vocabulary.
Describe the importance of data quality, integrity, monitoring, and compliance reporting.
Identify and define terms and functions of the master patient index (MPI) and the patient registry.
Identify regulatory guidelines, including confidentiality and release of information (ROI).
Describe the evolution of the electronic health record (EHR) and the personal health record (PHR).
Abstract data from collection tools and accurately enter it into EHR and practice management software.
Demonstrate the ability to use the practice management software to create and edit correspondence, reporting forms, and appointments.
