HORT 117 - Pruning

Principles of pruning including tools, techniques, timing, and special treatment of Pacific Northwest ornamentals. Field experience is stressed, including ladder use. Students must supply their own by-pass hand pruners, folding saw, and rain gear.Be prepared to arrive and depart from field trip sites on your own. S/U grade option.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Analyze, synthesize, and integrate information from multiple perspectives (lecture, reading, and field practice) in order to make decisions about how to appropriately prune a variety of common landscape plants in different situations.
Work effectively within a small group to analyze a set of plants, explore different pruning options, select a pruning approach, and defend the choice.
Demonstrate best management pruning practices and knowledge with appropriate behaviors necessary for employability in the landscape industry.
