AHE 148 - Clinical Lab Assistant Fundamentals
5.00 Credits Introduction to clinical laboratory fundamentals, laboratory specific terminology, organizational structure, specimen processing, waived testing, and departmental specimen set-up. Prerequisite Prerequisite: Completion of AHE 110, AHE 115,AHE 116, HCA 104 (formally BSTEC 104) and SHS 170; all with a minimum grade of 2.0 or equivalent. Corequisite: AHE 149. Corequisite AHE 149.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of clinical laboratory fundamentals including infection control and safety, workflow, specimen processing, use of common laboratory equipment, and quality assurance.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform waived point of care testing, hematology testing, chemistry testing, specimen set up for microbiology and urinalysis, and inventory for transfusion support services.
- Demonstrate the ability to use proper clinical laboratory terminology.
- Define the Clinical Laboratory Assistant role in the health care delivery system as it relates to the point of care or clinical laboratory environment.
- Identify and report potential errors that may occur during specimen collection, labeling, transporting, processing, testing, and result reporting.
- Report results of procedures using predetermined criteria.
- Maintain inventory control and supplies for chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and urinalysis tests.
- Verbally instruct patients in the proper collection and preservation for various urine samples.
