Nursing - Nursing Education Program Practical Nurse Certificate

Program Description This program prepares individuals to become licensed practical nurses. Throughout the program, students integrate experience caring for patients in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community agencies. Graduates receive a certificate in Practical Nursing. After graduation, individuals must take and pass the NCLEX PN examination to be licensed by the state as a practical nurse. Licensed graduates are qualified for employment as entry-level staff in long-term care facilities, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and home care agencies. This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 72 credits as outlined.

Communication Skills (7 Credits)

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (9 credits)
OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.
Cultural Diversity Skills
OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings. OUTCOMES:
- Behave with commitment, accountability, and integrity in the practice of nursing according to the legal and ethical standards for a licensed practical nurse.
- Apply sound interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with clients, families, support persons, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Collect holistic assessment data from all available sources and document and communicate this data to members of the healthcare team.
- Employ critical thinking skills to collaborate with members of the healthcare team to assist in developing nursing diagnoses, establishing client outcomes, planning and implementing nursing care, evaluating outcomes, and revising nursing care based on established nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems.
- Demonstrate respect and empathy while providing safe, therapeutic, individualized nursing care according to the established care plan.
- Demonstrate competency in technical nursing skills, information literacy skills, and application of scientific knowledge in all aspects of client care.
- Understand the role of the practical nurse in delegation, supervision, and collaboration with members of the healthcare team to manage resources and personnel in the delivery of nursing care to achieve client outcomes while supporting organizational outcomes.
- Prepare a plan for role transition to obtain an entry-level position in the field, including opportunities for future career development through continuing education, and further professional education in nursing through the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels.

Program Notes
The program code for this certificate is 326A. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record. - This seven quarter part-time program is designed for students who hold valid Washington state Certified Nursing Assistant license and are currently working in a direct patient care profession such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, or surgical technician.
- This program is by application only; admission requirements:
- Complete an application form for admission to the practical nursing program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in prerequisite
- Two professional
- National criminal background
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant licensure in Washington
- Minimum of six months recent patient care work
- Complete TEAS V
- Document technology skills

- Participation in externship classes requires documentation of immunization, TB, and criminal background status prior to registering for those classes. Students are advised that clinical placement may be denied if immunization records and CPR are not current or if there is a criminal history that the facility considers unacceptable.
Certificate General Information
Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To:
- Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
- Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
