Occupational Safety and Health - Technician Associate in Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description The Occupational Safety and Health Technician Associate in Applied Science-T Degree program provides students with the foundation, knowledge, and skills to prevent accidents and health hazards to workers, the community, and the environment. The health and safety concepts covered in the curriculum are applicable to all industry sectors, including public agencies and private companies. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 101 credits as outlined.

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.

Cultural Diversity Skills


OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings.

Distribution Requirements (20 credits)


Humanities (minimum 5 credits)


OUTCOME: Use humanities based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems, and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.

Social Sciences (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Use social science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements (64-67 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Apply federal and state occupational safety and health standards to identify potential hazards to workers, property, the environment, and the public; then design protocols and/or practices to minimize the hazards and avoid accidents.
  2. Identify sources of exposure and/or contamination.
  3. Collect data on work environments for ongoing analysis that may predict risks and hazards.
  4. Develop controls with the intent of preventing diseases and/or injury caused by chemical, radiological, biological, and the physical aspects of the occupational environment, while also considering ergonomic factors.
  5. Communicate with workers and management through writing, presentations, and training about all the aspects surrounding workplace and/or occupational risk and hazards. Train organizational personnel on compliance requirements with federal and state safety guidelines. The objective of this communication should strive to go beyond basic communications and regulatory requirements, so that it promotes a safety culture within all the members of an organization.
  6. Develop emergency response plans that can be used to prevent and/or mitigate incidents and accidents, assist organizational members after such incidents, and promote corrective action to prevent similar incidents.
  7. Develop methods to investigate and document occupational incidents and accidents. Formulate methods to review investigations and present and select preventative measures to prevent recurrence. Ensure record keeping meets regulatory requirements.
  8. Utilize basic quantitative skills to design and implement legally required safety and health records and maintain safety metrics.

The program code for this degree is OSHOHAAS. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • This AAS-T is a credit professional-technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. The degree is designed to articulate to Central Washington University, Columbia Southern University, Evergreen State College, and University of Phoenix. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should contact an advisor from that school to create a four-year plan. Please note that articulations are subject to annual revision. Edmonds College cannot be responsible for changes in graduation requirements at other institutions. Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degrees, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
  • Transfer of Credit Non-OSH credits will transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-OSH requirements. To transfer non-OSH credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college registration office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

*General Education Requirements Notes

  • Communication Skills: Students are advised to complete ENGL& 101 as soon as possible as it is a prerequisite for several other courses.
  • Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills: Students are advised to complete the math requirement as soon as possible, in order to complete other General Education and OSH courses that have this as a prerequisite.

  • Elective credits can also be selected from recommended professional technical or transfer courses with a course number of 100 or higher.
  • MATH& 107 is recommended as an additional elective for students planning to transfer to a four-year school.

Associate in Applied Science-Transfer General Information


Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.   

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Transferring to Another University or College

  • Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
  • Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.
