Robotics and Artificial Intelligence - Bachelor of Applied Science

​Description  The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Bachelor of Applied Science (ROBAI-BAS) degree provides advanced knowledge and skills for professional positions in robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation technology. This degree emphasizes practical hands-on techniques in conjunction with advanced analytical skills to prepare graduates for a multitude of positions related to the automation technologies.

Acceptance into the ROBAI-BAS program is by application only. This is in addition to the Edmonds College admissions process. The ROBAI-BAS degree is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 180 credits as outlined.

Advising Note: This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds College degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

Proficiency Requirement (minimum 60 credits)


This degree requires completion of an Associate Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degree, including 60 credits of professional technical courses from a regionally-accredited school to demonstrate proficiency in one of the following career areas:

  • Robotics and Automation Technology
  • Mechatronics
  • Computer Information Systems
  • See Proficiency Form for details of transferred credits, if applicable.

General Education Requirements (60 credits)


​This requirement will be met in two parts. At least 25-30 of the 60 credits will be completed as part of the AAS-T, or equivalent degree, prior to the start of the ROBAI-BAS program. The remaining credits will be completed during the ROBAI-BAS program.

​​​​Note: If students have more than 30 credits of general education prior to starting the ROABI-BAS program, credits may be transferable after a transcript review.

Communication Skills (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.

Humanities Distribution (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Use Humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.

Upper Division Program Requirements (60 credits)


OUTCOMES:

Students successfully completing the ROBAI BAS will be able to:

  1. Solve analytical and statistical problems, implement machine learning algorithms, design and test embedded software, and develop robotic control commands using appropriate software languages and libraries.
  2. Model, design, and analyze embedded system hardware and software architectures and communication protocols.
  3. Design and construct models and prototypes for robotics and embedded electronics using additive manufacturing (3D printing.)
  4. Identify, evaluate, and implement multiple robotic sensing systems including computer vision, voice recognition, tactile and proximity sensors, and environmental/scientific probes.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the applications and trends in AI, machine learning, and robotics and their societal and ethical implications.
  6. Apply research and critical thinking to solve technological problems in machine learning and robotics.
  7. Utilize effective communication skills when working in groups, writing specifications and documentation, and presenting ideas to stakeholders.

The program code for this degree is CPSRABAS. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • This program is designed for students who have completed an AAS-T degree in Robotics and Automation Technology, Materials Science, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or who have completed an ATA in one of these areas and taken additional prerequisite general education courses. Contact the Engineering Technology (ETEC) department in the STEM division for details.
  • The Bachelor of Applied Science in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is by application only; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • Admissions Checklist:
    • Completion of an AAS-T, or equivalent degree, in Mechatronics, Robotics and Automation Technology, or Computer Information Systems.
    • Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA with a minimum of 2.0 in core courses of the AAS-T, or equivalent degree, in specialized fields.
    • Admissions into Edmonds College.
    • Completed application.
    • Current resume that describes relevant work and skills; including internships, work study, and/or volunteering activities.
    • Unofficial transcripts from any colleges attended with credits that the student would like to transfer. Official transcripts will be required upon acceptance to the program.
    • Non-refundable $25.00 BAS application fee.
  • Alternative general education courses previously completed from an accredited college may be accepted to meet the General Education requirements through the transcript evaluation process. Please contact the Program Manager for more details.
  • Additional general elective can be used with departmental approval.

Bachelor of Applied Science General Information


BAS Degree General Description The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree is a 180 credit baccalaureate degree, specifically designed to build on professional-technical associate degrees that provide workplace skills, such as Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degrees. BAS degrees include a professional core of courses from the AAS-T degree, general education credits and upper division courses. BAS degrees are a pathway to the baccalaureate level with upper-division coursework in an applied field that provide expanded career opportunities for graduates and meet the needs of employers in the community. BAS degrees incorporate more applied, hands-on learning than a traditional bachelor’s degree and allow a student to advance their skills and abilities without requiring the student to follow the traditional direct transfer degree pathway. Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 60 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Consult quarterly with a faculty and/or academic advisor; 
  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
  • Before beginning the program, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.  

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
