Family Life Education Department - Cooperative Board Leadership Certificate of Completion

Program Description Students who have demonstrated leadership skills in addition to effective parenting skills through participation in FLED affiliated cooperative preschool courses are eligible for this Certificate in Cooperative Board Leadership. In addition to parenting skills in child development, family relationships, and related topics that lead to effective parenting, this certificate includes leadership skills related to the operations of a non-profit corporation’s board. Students earning this certificate take on additional responsibilities as executive officers of the preschool governing board. This Certificate of Completion requires successful completion of a minimum of 18 credits as outlined.

Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds College certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

Program Requirements (18 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate cooperative strategies for working with young children and adults in a cooperative preschool setting.
  2. Identify a variety of viewpoints on parenting and child development issues and recognize the influence of culture, language and other factors in child development and parenting practices.
  3. Work cooperatively with other members of the preschool board, cooperative preschool employees and Family Life Education faculty.
  4. Communicate effectively with preschool parents, preschool board members, cooperative preschool employees and Family Life Education faculty.
  5. Complete tasks in a professional and timely manner while maintaining confidentiality and respect for others.
  6. Demonstrate leadership skills that may include organizing and implementing activities/events, delegating tasks, facilitating meetings, keeping records, and problem solving.
  7. Work with fellow board members to facilitate the operations of a nonprofit business; including but not limited to: employee supervision, budgeting, marketing, fiscal control and classroom operations

The program code for this degree is CHDBLC01. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record. 
  • Students will be required to enroll in FLED classes for 5 quarters (summer excluded)
  • 15 credits will be in any combination of FLED 122, FLED 123 & FLED 124. Courses may be repeated for credit.
  • 3 credits will be in enrollment over three quarters of FLED 172, FLED 173 and FLED 174.
  • All classes are graded as S/U

Certificate of Completion General Information


This certificate of completion (COC) is awarded upon completion of the required number of courses. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or S grades in all college level courses in order to earn this COC. Certain certificates may require a higher cumulative grade point average as dictated by industry standards. All credits for this COC must be earned at Edmonds College.

Certificates of completion (COCs) are not eligible for financial aid; however, some COCs may be eligible for veteran’s benefits. If you are interested in this COC, please talk to your faculty advisor or an academic advisor in student services.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
