Nursing - Nursing Education Program Practical Nurse Certificate

Program Description This program prepares individuals to become licensed practical nurses. Throughout the program, students integrate experience caring for patients in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community agencies. Graduates receive a certificate in Practical Nursing. After graduation, individuals must take and pass the NCLEX PN examination to be licensed by the state as a practical nurse. Licensed graduates are qualified for employment as entry-level staff in long-term care facilities, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and home care agencies.
Acceptance into this program is by application only. This is in addition to the Edmonds College admissions process. This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 80 credits as outlined.
Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds College certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

Communication Skills (5 credits)

OUTCOME: Act responsibly in applying professional and academic standards associated with success in educational, workplace, community, and group settings. Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.

OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, laboratory and field equipment, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of data, concepts, and insights to tackle problems, conduct experiments, and critically evaluate proposals, claims, processes, and theories in biology.
Social Sciences (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Use social science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.
Cultural Diversity Skills
OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings.

Program Requirements (38 credits)
OUTCOMES: - Demonstrate professional collaboration and communication with healthcare team members.
- Demonstrate therapeutic and culturally competent communication to provide person centered care to patients, families and communities.
- Apply clinical judgment and the nursing process to provide safe evidence-based care to diverse patients across the lifespan.
- Integrate quality improvement, healthcare informatics and scholarship activities to enhance patient care within the healthcare system.
- Demonstrate caring and integrity by understanding and upholding ethical and legal principles of the nursing profession.

The program code for this certificate is LPNPNC45. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record. - The nursing core courses are designed as a six quarter part-time program for students who are currently working in a direct patient care profession such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, or surgical technician.
- This program is by application only; admission requirements are as follows:
- Complete an application form for admission to the practical nursing program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 in general education and distribution courses
- Two professional recommendations
- Minimum of six months recent patient care experience
- Complete TEAS test
- Document technology skills
- Optional: Extra consideration will be given to applicants with a valid CNA certificate/license, MA certificate/license, or military medical corps experience. Submit proof of certificate, license, or military service.

- NURS 160 and NURS 161 will be taken in the final term of the certificate program.

- Students transferring from other institutions may substitute BIOL&160 for BIOL&211; see advisor.
***Program Requirements Notes: - Students planning to continue on to an RN program must meet the laddering requirements of the school to which they plan to apply AND should consider completing BIOL& 260, CMST& 210, NUTR& 101 and PSYC& 200.
- Participation in externship classes requires documentation of immunization (including COVID-19 vaccine), TB, and criminal background status prior to registering for those classes. Students are advised that clinical placement may be denied if immunization records and CPR are not current or if there is a criminal history that the facility considers unacceptable.
