Program Description
The Landscape Design Specialization Associate of Technical Arts degree provides students with a strong foundation in ornamental horticulture. Students develop skills in: drawing and drafting, spatial design, planting design, landscape construction, and design of amenity gardens, edible landscapes, and restorative spaces. The program emphasizes both technical knowledge and hands-on experience. Graduates are prepared to work in landscape design firms, municipalities, public gardens, or start their own business. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 95 credits as outlined.

The Career and College Success course should be completed within the first two quarters. Students who transfer in 30 or more college-level credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher may be exempt from the Career and College Success course; see faculty advisor.

- Identify common landscape plants for the Pacific Northwest and their cultural needs.
- Compare and contrast basic theories, concepts, and terminology in order to apply sustainable horticultural practices and techniques.
- Describe plant problems, diagnosis, and management options.
- Compare and contrast the variety of career options in horticulture.
- Design and develop landscape plans that incorporate an understanding of the site, the needs of the client, and aesthetic qualities.
- Communicate graphically the design development process, final landscape design, and construction details to clients and landscape professionals.
- Describe and apply basic business principles essential to the landscape industry.

Program CodeThe program code for this degree is LAGLDAPT. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record. Transfer Notes- To transfer horticulture or other college credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the Enrollment Services office. This should be done during your first quarter at Edmonds College.
- Based on previous experience, students may be able to substitute courses, waive credits through exception to policy, or receive credit for prior learning. Other curriculum modifications based on work or other special experiences should be discussed with your Horticulture advisor.
Program Requirements Notes- Students should complete New Student Advising which will include obtaining English and Math placement with the Testing and Assessment Center. Placement into ENGLP 93/AENGL 93 or higher, as well as MATH 87 or higher is strongly recommended and may be required for some courses.
- Students should meet quarterly with an advisor from the horticulture faculty to assure graduation as planned.

Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes. Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses. Students Are Advised To - Review how to apply for certain exams to be awarded as credit.
- Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
- Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
- At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.
Graduation Application It is the student’s responsibility to apply for graduation. Your degree or certificate will not be awarded unless you submit a graduation application. A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter. Transferring to Another University or College - This degree is not designed to transfer to another university or college.
