Practical Nursing Program to Associate in Nursing DTA/MRP


The Licensed Practical Nursing Program (LPN) to Associate in Nursing (ADN) Direct Transfer Agreement/Major Related Pathway (DTA/MRP) degree consists of a maximum of 153 credits earned in General Requirements, Distribution Requirements, Program Requirements, and Electives.  General education and nursing core credits earned in a PN program will be applied to the requirements for this degree. 

This degree is designed to coordinate with the Edmonds College (EC) Practical Nursing (PN) Certificate to provide a seamless pathway for students to move from LPN to registered nurse (RN), to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and for students who plan to transfer to Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs at University of Washington, Washington State University, Western Washington University, Saint Martin’s University, WGU Washington, Bellevue College, Columbia Basin College, Olympic College, or Wenatchee Valley College. 

Acceptance into this program is by application only. This is in addition to the Edmonds College admissions process.

  1. Collaborate with the healthcare team to manage complex patient care needs across health systems.
  2. Provide person-centered care by prioritizing culturally appropriate communication to plan and deliver care for culturally diverse patients, families, and communities.
  3. Integrate clinical judgment and the nursing process to plan, provide, and evaluate safe, evidence-based care to diverse patients throughout the lifespan and across health systems.
  4. Enhance patient care by employing quality improvement strategies, healthcare informatics, and scholarship activities within multiple practice areas.
  5. Adhere to legal and ethical principles to act with caring and integrity, providing care and advocacy for diverse patients, families, and communities.

Note: The Career and College Success course credits apply to General Electives in this degree and must be completed within the first two quarters. Students who transfer in with 30+ credits and a GPA of 2.5 or higher can apply for a waiver.   

Program Notes


The program code for this degree is RENDTAA. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • The nursing core courses are designed as a four quarter part-time program for students who are currently working in direct patient care profession as a licensed practical nurse.
  • This program is by application only; admission requirements are as follows:
    • Complete the application process for admission to the LPN-RN program by the deadline posted on the nursing website.
      • Achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in general education and distribution courses  
      • Submit valid unencumbered WA LPN licsense

  • General Education courses listed (with the exception of SOC 250 and HUM 250) must be completed before beginning the Program Requirements. It is strongly advised that these two courses be completed before starting the program.

**Distribution Requirements Notes:

  • Distribution courses listed must be completed before beginning the Program Requirements.
  • Students may substitute BIOL& 231 and BIOL& 232 for BIOL&241 and BIOL&242; see a department advisor.
  • SOC 250 must be completed prior to or concurrently with NURS 211/212
  • HUM 250 must be taken prior to or concurrently with NURS 231/232.
  • Participation in externship classes requires documentation of immunization (including COVID-19 vaccine), TB, and criminal background status prior to registering for those classes. Students are advised that clinical placement may be denied if immunization records and CPR are not current or if there is a criminal history that the facility considers unacceptable.

Associate in Arts General Information


Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To

  • Review how to apply for certain exams to be awarded as credit.
  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.  

Graduation Application

It is the student’s responsibility to apply for graduation. Your degree or certificate will not be awarded unless you submit a graduation application. A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Transferring to Another University or College

  • Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
  • Completion of this degree does not guarantee admission to a transfer institution.
  • Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.
