Points of Interest

Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing

The college partners with local businesses such as The Boeing Co., Giddens Industries, and Crane Aerospace to match its training to employer needs. It has a well-equipped materials science lab. Classes introduce students to composite materials and engineering design and prepare students for entry-level positions or to enter bachelor’s degree programs. Students can also gain business skills for manufacturing careers. The college houses the National Resource Center for Materials Education Technology, which provides curriculum for materials technology nationwide, and operates the Washington Aerospace Training and Research Center, which offers accelerated, industry-specific, entry-level training in aerospace manufacturing.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

With 20 National Science Foundation grants, the college provides more opportunities for STEM students including support services. It is increasing the number of students in science by reaching out to those who, without support, won’t earn math or science degrees, including many women, underrepresented minorities, low-income, and first-generation college students. Programs of study include: digital forensics, engineering, engineering technology, and Associate of Science degrees  with five areas of specialty. The college holds community events and workshops that connect with K-12 schools, students, and parents and increase interest in science studies and careers at an early age.

Above and Beyond

Students have opportunities to challenge themselves with high-level academic programs including: Honors classes ; undergraduate research projects in disciplines such as physics  with partners including CWU, UW, and NASA; and more than 20 service-learning projects with community partners each quarter. They apply what they learn in hands on projects and internships. Engineering students may build submarines, racecars, or windmills and digital forensics students work on actual criminal cases. Students are optimally prepared to succeed at the university level.
