ASL& 123 - American Sign Language III
5.0 Credits Continuation of ASL& 122. Vocabulary expansion, idioms, and increasingly sophisticated grammatical structures. Focus on receptive skills continues with an increased emphasis on expressive skills. Continuing study of Deaf culture. Prerequisite ASL& 122 with a minimum grade of 2.0 or instructor permission. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Use intermediate level ASL grammatical structures, including more complex classifiers, spatial organization, and noun-verb pairs.
- Develop intermediate level skills incorporating classifiers and adverbial markers into descriptive sentences and narratives.
- Engage in conversations about a variety of topics including routines and personal characteristics.
- Explain the complexities of topics concerning the Deaf community (for example, cochlear implants, oralism and Deaf education) from a variety of perspectives.
- Enhance awareness of culturally appropriate conversational strategies used by a variety of Deaf community members to include tactile signing and modes of communication along the sign continuum.
- Utilize video to not only analyze their own expressive skills, but also demonstrate receptive skills by watching and responding to a variety of ASL users’ material.
