DESCRIPTION Procedure for Board policy BOT 4.0 Board Philosophy of Governance.
PROCEDURE DETAILS The Board will:1. Deliberate in many voices, but govern in one policy. 2. Lead, direct, and inspire the organization through the careful establishment of broad written policies reflecting the Board’s values and perspectives. The Board’s major policy focus will be on the intended long-term impacts outside the operating organization, not on the administrative or programmatic means of attaining those effects. 3. Enforce upon itself the discipline needed to govern with excellence. Discipline will apply to matters such as attendance, preparation for meetings, policymaking principles, respect of roles, and ensuring the continuity of governance capability. 4. Monitor and discuss the Board’s process and performance at least once each year. Self-monitoring will include comparison of Board activity and discipline to Board policies. 5. Board development will include orientation of new members in the Board’s governance process and discussion of process improvement at least once per year during the Board evaluation process. In addition, new Board members will be invited to attend the Association of College Trustees (ACT) New Trustee Orientation.
