AHE 144 - Clinical Lab Assistant I
5.0 Credits Overview of the clinical laboratory, including HIPAA regulations, OSHA standards, quality assurance practices, laboratory terminology, laboratory organizational structure, and applying a general understanding of the functions of a clinical laboratory information system. Prerequisite: AHE 110, 116, BSTEC 104, 129, HIV/AIDS and CPR all with a minimum grade of 2.0 or equivalent.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the process of how patients, specimens, and requests for lab services arrive in the laboratory. [REASON]
- List and explain the basic tests run on specimens received by the laboratory. [REASON]
- Identify laboratory equipment and explain its use. [REASON]
- Demonstrate the ability to perform and record vital sign measurements. [REASON]
- Demonstrate a functional understanding of general medical terminology and specific laboratory terminology. [COMMUNICATE]
- Describe total quality management as it relates to the medical laboratory environment. [REASON]
- Define the Clinical Laboratory Assistant role in the healthcare delivery system as it relates to the point of care or clinical laboratory environment. [ACT]
- Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety practices. [ACT]
