Social and Human Services - Addiction Studies Associate in Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description This program of study provides the foundation, knowledge, and skills to effectively work with individuals and families experiencing difficulties resulting from drug use, misuse, or dependency. Successful completion of this degree will enable the graduate to satisfy the state of Washington’s educational requirements for chemical dependency professionals. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 113 credits as outlined.

Communication Skills (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.

Human Relations and Professional Development Skills (14 credits)


OUTCOME: Act responsibly in applying professional and academic standards associated with personal wellness; sustainable management of resources; and/or with success in educational, workplace, community, and team settings.

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze and solve problems.

Cultural Diversity Skills


OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings.

Distribution Requirements (10 credits)


Natural Sciences and Mathematics (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.

Social Sciences (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Use Social Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements (74 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and treatment of chemical dependency, including knowledge of the motivation of change, physiology of addiction, and professional issues.
  2. Demonstrate ability to effectively work with consumers using communication skills, group interaction, problem solving, ethical procedures, and crisis management techniques.
  3. Describe a range of evidence-based practice methods, including principles, strategies, and techniques used to assist consumers in reaching their service goals.
  4. Demonstrate ability in case management tasks such as assessment, treatment planning, documentation, and referral procedures.

Program Notes


The program code for this degree is 437U. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.
  • This degree is a professional-technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. In general, professional-technical degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities. This degree will articulate to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences at Seattle Central College. (Students are encouraged to check entrance requirements as they are subject to change.)
  • Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider associate of arts or associate of science degrees, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
  • A Washington state background check is required for entrance into this vocation and some limitations are in effect for those with former felony convictions. If you have questions about this, please contact the department adviser or the Department of Health directly.
  • Not all courses are offered every quarter. Some elective courses are offered only once a year. Students are strongly urged to consult with their faculty adviser regarding their career objectives, interests, and schedule planning.

  • Human Relations and Professional Development Skills: those interested in the Prevention Specialist Certificate of Completion can substitute SHS 200 for SHS 232 - Advanced Practicum.

** Program Requirements Note

  • SHS 104 and SHS 117, if taken with SHS 200, FSS 195 and FSS 215 also meets the requirements for the Prevention Specialist Certificate of Completion, which covers the educational component of the state of Washington’s Associated Prevention Professional (APP) credential.

Associate in Applied Science-Transfer General Information


Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds CC’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.   

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Transferring to Another University or College

  • Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
  • Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
