Hospitality - Business Management - Transfer to Washington State University

Program Description This associate of arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to Washington State University’s School of Hospitality Business Management program. Students who complete the AA degree and all admission requirements will be granted junior standing on acceptance at WSU. This degree is available online.

Edmonds CC Requirements This AA degree is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 108 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a cumulative minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses and a 2.5 minimum GPA in all hospitality courses. Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Intermediate Algebra This requirement may be satisfied by completion of two years of high school algebra, completion of Intermediate Algebra (MATH 090 ) with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement into college level math. Only the University of Washington retains this requirement, but all baccalaureate institutions in the state of Washington accepting the DTA (including UW) require successful completion of college level math (100-level or above) or PHIL& 120  (see “Quantitative Analysis or Symbolic Reasoning” below). PHIL& 120 and all college level math courses at Edmonds CC currently require completion of Intermediate Algebra (MATH 090) with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement into college level math. Consult with an advisor early in your program planning to avoid errors in math course selection.

Students are advised to

  • Consult with a faculty adviser quarterly. If transferring to a four-year institution, the student should consult with the appropriate department at the intended transferring school for entrance requirements. For more information or to schedule an advising appointment, call 425.640.1458.
  • Review this college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning.
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC.
  • Submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.

Admission Requirements to Washington State University’s Business Administration program All students who intend to transfer to Washington State University should talk with a university adviser to review specific admission requirements. Students must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to the Hospitality Business Management program. Visit Washington State University’s College of Business program for more information.

Washington State University School of Hospitality Business Management requires students to complete 1,000 hours of practical experience to graduate, 360 hours (12 credits) can be completed at Edmonds CC.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Communication Skills (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Write in clear, effective ways, adapted to audience, context, and purpose.

Quantitative Analysis or Symbolic Reasoning (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Apply mathematical, quantitative, or symbolic models to solve problems, draw inferences, or support conclusions appropriate to an individual discipline. 

Health and Physical Education (3 credits)


OUTCOME: Demonstrate knowledge and skills in one of these areas: emergency care, contemporary health, principles of lifelong fitness, or athletic performance and teamwork.

Note: You may choose any combination of PE courses , HLTH 100 , HLTH 105 , or HLTH 150 .

Distribution Requirements (50 credits)


A maximum of ten (10) credits in any one department/discipline may be included in the 50 distribution credits.

Humanities (15 credits)


OUTCOME: Use Humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.

Note: Select courses from at least three (3) departments within this distribution area. A maximum of five (5) credits in Performance/Skills courses may be applied. And a maximum of five (5) credits in foreign language at the 100 level may be applied.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (15 credits)


OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.

Note: At least ten (10) credits of Natural Science classes are required, five (5) of which must be a laboratory science. (Laboratory science courses are marked with an asterisk (*) on the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distribution Course List.) Computer science, mathematics, and philosophy courses are not natural science courses.

Social Sciences (20 credits)


OUTCOME: Use Social Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements (35 credits)


OUTCOMES: 

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the components of the hospitality industry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hotel operations from a management perspective.
