Family Support Studies - Transfer to Washington State University

Program Description Family Support Studies is a unique program which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working or desiring to work with individuals and their families using family support practice and principles. This associate in arts (AA) degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to the Washington State University’s Human Development program.

With this AA degree and all admission requirements, students will qualify for junior standing on acceptance into the program. WSU offers a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development on the Pullman and Vancouver campuses and through WSU Online. With this articulation, it is possible for students to earn a four-year degree in human development that recognizes the Family Support Studies courses as a minor concentration through access to Edmonds CC and distance degree programs.

Edmonds Community College Requirements This AA degree requires successful completion of 98 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Intermediate Algebra This requirement may be satisfied by completion of high school mathematics through second year algebra, completion of MATH 090  or MATH 095 .

Students are advised to

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser If transferring to a four-year institution, the student should consult with the appropriate department at the intended transferring school for entrance requirements; and
  • Send for transcripts from other colleges where the student has earned credits and request a transcript evaluation. Transcripts are to be mailed to the Enrollment Services Office at Edmonds CC. Transcript evaluation forms are available through Enrollment Services.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Admission Requirement to Washington State University’s Human Development Program All students who intend to transfer to WSU should talk with a university adviser to review specific admission requirements. Students must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to WSU. See WSU transfer courses equivalency guidelines.

OUTCOME: Demonstrate knowledge and skills in one of these areas: emergency care, contemporary health, principles of lifelong fitness, or athletic performance and teamwork.

OUTCOME: Apply multiple perspectives when examining cultural differences and interacting in multicultural settings.

Distribution Requirements (50 credits)


A maximum of 10 credits in any one department/discipline may be included in the 50 distribution credits.

Humanities (minimum 15 credits)


OUTCOME: Use Humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.

Note: Complete one of the Communication Studies courses below and select 10 credits from at least two other departments within this distribution area. A maximum of five (5) credits in Performance/Skills courses and five (5) credits in foreign language may be applied.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics (minimum 15 credits)


OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.

Note: At least 10 credits of Natural Science classes are required, five of which must be a laboratory science. WSU recommends NUTR& 101. (Laboratory science courses are marked with an asterisk on the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distribution Course List.)
