Business Information Technology - Medical Information Technology Associate of Technical Arts Degree

Program Description The Associate of Technical Arts Degree in Medical Information Technology is a program for students who completed a Business Information Technology - Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate  or Business Information Technology - Medical Information Technology - Medical Billing Specialist Certificate . This degree consists of a combination of medical knowledge, and business and computer applications designed to prepare the graduate for employment as a coder/technician or manager/supervisor in a medical clinic, hospital, ambulatory healthcare facility, skilled nursing facility, state or federal health agency, law and insurance firms, pharmaceutical companies, and medical product vendors.

Credit/Grade Requirements The ATA degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 90 credits consisting of program requirements and electives as outlined based on your certificate choice AND an earned certificate in either Business Information Technology - Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate  (40 credits) or Business Information Technology - Medical Billing Specialist Certificate  (64 credits).

A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Students Are Advised To

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
  • Communicate with an academic adviser, and
  • Submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.

Communication Skills (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Write in clear, effective ways, adapted to audience, context, and purpose.

Quantitative Skills (4 credits minimum)


OUTCOME: Apply mathematical, quantitative, or symbolic models to solve problems, draw inferences, or support conclusions appropriate to an individual discipline. 

Human Relations/Group Interaction (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Identify and explain how to apply the skills needed to maintain effective working relationships in multicultural settings.

Software Application Skills (9-10 credits)


Required courses for students who have completed the Medical Billing Specialist Certificate (19-20 credits)

  • Use appropriate technology and technical skills to manage information and solve problems.
  • Apply medical concepts and terminology to assigned tasks.
  • Apply legal, ethical, and confidentiality concepts.
  • List professional values and exhibit professional behavior in a work environment.
