IN 12.02pr - Course Materials Affordability : Course Materials Adoption SUMMARY/SCOPE This procedure ensures that faculty have the opportunity to choose the instructional materials of their preference, while also recognizing the bookstore’s need for timely adoptions to be fiscally sustainable while providing affordable options for students.
DESCRIPTION One of the requirements of a sound working relationship between faculty, students and the Edmonds College (EC) Bookstore is a course materials adoption policy and relevant procedures that recognize the responsibility of instructors to choose the instructional materials of their preference, while also recognizing departmental consistency, the economic hardships of students, and the need to operate the EC Bookstore successfully, both in terms of rapport with other campus factions, and financial independence.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
-
Requests for course materials shall be the responsibility of individual instructors, who shall observe the deadline dates set by the bookstore. The instructor shall indicate the required course materials on the course materials adoption platform provided by the bookstore. Course books that are recommended but not required shall be included on the order form and designated as optional materials. If no course materials are required for a course, the instructor must so inform the bookstore by the deadline date.
-
Failure of an instructor to observe the conditions outlined in item 1 above shall result in responsibility for ordering books and supplies being shifted to the instructor’s department head or division director.
-
In the case of a vacant teaching position, either full- or part-time, the department head or division director shall have the decision-making authority to choose the text and supplies, and shall accept the responsibility for forwarding the order to the bookstore by the deadline date.
-
The bookstore will make every attempt to inform the instructor of out‒of‒print or new editions of the text order.
-
Requests for desk copies should be sent directly to the publisher, not to the bookstore.
