CONST 270 - Structural Design I
4.0 Credits
Beginning structural requirements for frame construction including review of engineering algebra, dead and live loads of buildings, forces and stresses, moments and reactions, types of beams, kinds of loads, shear and bending moments and engineering notations. Prerequisite: MATH 080 or placement in MATH 090 and CONST 145 or instructor’s permission.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Determine and sum component forces in Vectors. [REASON]
- Evaluate external forces on a body using Moments. [REASON]
- Prepare Free Body Diagrams. [REASON]
- Evaluate internal forces in a truss using the Method of Joints. [REASON]
- Calculate the Centroid of a body. [REASON]
- Calculate Stress and Thermal Deformation. [REASON]
- Calculate forces in and size joists, beams, and rafters. [REASON]
- Design steel beams. [REASON]
- Design wood columns. [REASON]
