Early Childhood Education - State Certificate


PGM CODE - 46E

Program Description The Early Childhood Education Department has an ECE-State Certificate, an ECE Intermediate Certificate, an ECE ATA Degree and an ECE AAS-T Degree. The ECE-State Certificate is designed to provide the core learning necessary for preparing students for entry level career positions in early childhood (birth to eight years) settings and for providing the opportunity to continue their professional academic education. Coursework taken to complete the ECE-State Certificate, as a core certificate, can be applied toward the Early Childhood Education Intermediate Certificate, 57 credits; the ATA degree, 90 credits; and the AAS-T degree, 90 credits.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 47 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must have been received from Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Students Are Advised To

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with an academic adviser.
  • Submit an “Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits” form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds Community College

Quantitative Skills: Apply mathematical, quantitative or symbolic models to solve problems, draw inferences, or support conclusions appropriate to an individual discipline.

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Program Learning  Requirements for this certificate, students will be able to:

  • Document a foundational knowledge of how the role as a child development specialist will influence and be applied as a teacher of young children - citing specific teaching approaches, strategies, rational for decision making and tools for early education.
  • Document the ability to articulate a personal definition of the role of the early childhood teacher and a professional philosophy with defined strategies and identified bodies of knowledge that optimally support and encourage children’s growth and development.
  • Document evidence of professionally defined dispositions that will support reflective thought and the use of reflective thought to: guide selection of teaching strategies; methods of interactions; and curriculum decisions.
  • Document and demonstrate understanding of professionally defined characteristics, standards and practices (teaching strategies) of effective early childhood teachers.
  • Document the skills and knowledge to plan a curriculum, and classroom program that is based upon observational data, professionally defined standards, current research findings, and theories of learning during the early childhood stages of development.
