Occupational Safety and Health - Construction Safety Technician Certificate


Program Description The Occupational Safety and Health Construction Safety Technician Certificate was developed due to the need for trained health and safety professionals in the construction industry. This certificate is designed for individuals with current or past experience in the construction industry who are interested in taking on an expanded role focusing on construction safety. This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 56-59 credits as outlined.

Program Requirements (37-40 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Apply federal and state OSH standards to identify potential hazards to workers, property, the environment, and the public and then design protocols and/or practices to minimize the hazards and avoid accidents.
  2. Develop controls with the intent of preventing diseases and/or injury caused by chemical, radiological, biological, and the physical aspects of the occupational environment, while also considering ergonomic factors.
  3. Communicate with workers and management through writing, presentations, and training about all the aspects surrounding workplace and/or occupational risk and hazards. Train organizational personnel on compliance requirements with federal and state safety guidelines. The objective of this communication should strive to go beyond basic communications and regulatory requirements, so that it promotes a safety culture within all the members of an organization.
  4. Conduct job site inspections and determine areas that may not be in compliance with state and federal laws and/or company policies.
  5. Develop methods to investigate and document occupational incidents and accidents. Formulate methods to review investigations and present and select preventative measures to prevent recurrence. Ensure record keeping meets regulatory requirements.
  6. Develop a construction specific safety plan that will be in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  7. Utilize basic quantitative skills to design and implement legally required safety and health records and maintain safety metrics.

The program code for this certificate is OSHCSC45. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • Transfer of Credit  Credits from equivalent courses may be transfered from any regionally accredited college to satisfy the credit requirements. To transfer credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the Credentials office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.
  • Consult with an OSH faculty advisor for course selection to create an academic plan to meet degree requirements. (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student.)

Certificate General Information


Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice per year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.  

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
