Early Childhood Education - Associate in Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description The Early Childhood Education Associate in Applied Science-T (AAS-T) Degree is a professional technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in university-level transfer programs. The degree is designed to prepare graduates to enter into employment in early childhood (infancy to pre-kindergarten) program settings, but also provide some transferable credits should a student pursue a four-year degree at a later point. This degree transfers into the Child, Youth, and Family Studies (CYFS) BAS degree offered at Edmonds College. This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 101 credits as outlined. Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds College certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

General Education Requirements (15 credits)
Communication Skills (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline. Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.
Cultural Diversity Skills
OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings. ____Cultural Diversity Requirement met Distribution Requirements (15 credits)
Humanities (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Use humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems, and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes. Natural Sciences and Mathematics (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights. Social Sciences (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Use social science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures. Program Requirements (68 credits)
OUTCOMES: - Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of how the role as a child development specialist will influence and be applied as a teacher of young children, citing specific teaching approaches, strategies, a rationale for decision making, and tools for early education.
- Demonstrate the ability to articulate a personal definition of the role of the early childhood teacher and a professional philosophy with defined strategies and identified bodies of knowledge that optimally support and encourage children’s growth and development.
- Demonstrate evidence of professionally defined dispositions that will support reflective thought and the use of reflective thought to guide the selection of teaching strategies, methods of interactions, and curriculum decisions.
- Demonstrate an understanding of professionally defined characteristics, standards, practices, and teaching strategies of effective early childhood teachers.
- Demonstrate the skills and knowledge to plan a curriculum and classroom program based upon observational data, professionally defined standards, current research findings, and theories of learning during the early childhood stage of development.
Career and College Success (3 credits)

The program code for this degree is ECEECAAS. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record. - Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate in Arts Degree, which is specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. All students who intend to transfer should meet with an advisor of the college they plan to transfer to, to review specific admission requirements.
- For students interested in earning a BAS in Child, Youth, and Family Studies degree, MATH& 146 may be a preferred option as future degrees may require Research Methods and/or Statistics as a prerequisite course. Each academic program varies and it is best to seek a program advisor for further guidance.

Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds College’s four General Education Outcomes (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.
Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets page.
Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.
Students Are Advised To:
- Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
- Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
- At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds College. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds College.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
Transferring to Another University or College
- Admission application deadlines vary, students must meet the deadline for the university or college to which they plan to apply for admission to transfer.
- Consultation with the appropriate department or an advisor at the intended transfer school is highly recommended.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
