Associate of General Studies Degree

Program Description The purpose of this degree is to grant academic recognition for an individually designed program of 90 credits of course work. This course work is developed in consultation with an adviser to meet the vocational, educational or personal needs of the individual. This degree is designed for students not planning to transfer to a senior institution. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a minimum of 30 credits taken at Edmonds Community College are required.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

I. Basic Requirements (18 credits):

Quantitative Skills (5 credits)


Health and Physical Education (3 credits)


You may choose any combination of PE courses numbered 100 or above, HLTH 100 , HLTH 105 , or HLTH 150 .

Cultural Diversity


Five credits from above must be designated “Cultural Diversity.”

II. Distribution Requirements (15 credits):


Select five credits from each of the following three areas (level 100 or above).

Humanities


Natural Science and Mathematics


Social Sciences


III. Electives (to total 90 credits):


It is recommended but not required that students include 30 credits of related course work in a major area as part of their electives. Electives selection may be from Distribution Requirements, professional-technical departments, or other credited college course work.

Degree Outcomes


Students completing this degree will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in reading, writing, speaking, and/or interacting skills adapted to varied audiences, contexts, and purposes.
  • Demonstrate quantitative skills through mathematical, statistical, or symbolic reasoning.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in one of these three areas: emergency care, the principles of lifelong fitness, or athletic performance and teamwork.
  • Use multiple perspectives while engaging diverse communities, contexts, and ideas to develop knowledge, awareness, and skills that facilitate learning and analysis.
  • Apply humanities, social science, and natural science/mathematical methods for constructing knowledge, reasoning, communicating, and problem solving.
