This degree is designed for individuals with experience or prior training in Information Technology who wish to augment their current occupation or acquire new abilities to advance their job skills and qualifications. Individuals completing this degree may qualify for employment in a variety of roles including, database designers, developers or administrators, business or systems analysts, or information technology management.
Topics covered in the core courses and related/specialized studies map to the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) exams, administered through the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals, and are continually being added and updated to meet industry needs.
Entry Requirements Students entering Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs will need to contact Enrollment Services and take both the English and Math placement tests. Students should bring the results of these tests to their first advising appointment with a CIS adviser for proper placement into the program. In addition, some CIS certificates and degrees begin at an advanced level and are designed for students already in the IT field. Students entering these programs may complete a portfolio of prior learning by taking CIS 116 . The portfolio will be used to waive entry-level courses and place students in the appropriate advanced courses. Please see a CIS adviser for more information.
The prerequisite for the required math course, CIS 114 Math and Problem Solving, is placement into MATH 080 . Students with ACCUPLACER scores below the required level should take the appropriate math prerequisites and plan their schedule accordingly.
Credit/Grade Requirements This degree is awarded upon a student’s completion of a minimum of 96 credits of Program Requirements as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all college-level courses as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.8 within the program requirements.
Career Management Requirement Students obtaining ATA degrees are required to take at least 1 credit of career management, which can be satisfied by taking either CIS 116 or CIS 280 .
Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.
CWU Transfer This ATA degree transfers directly to Central Washington University’s Bachelor’s in Information Technology and Administrative Management on the Edmonds Community College campus. Students must complete specific requirements for English, math and logic. For more information, see the CWU website or email the CWU adviser at linklett@cwu.edu.
Students are advised to:
- plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
- review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
- check plans with the appropriate faculty adviser, and
- see the CIS website to determine when courses are generally offered.
