Computer Information Systems - Information Security and Digital Forensics Associate of Technical Arts Degree

Our high-level Associate of Technical Arts degree in Information Security brings you the latest technology and methods for solving today’s business IT Security needs. This curriculum includes: computer forensics; incident response essentials; system security for Windows and Linux hosts and servers; packet analysis; virtual private network implementation; firewall implementation; intrusion detection system implementation; security risk analysis and assessment; policy development; and layered security design and implementation. Those completing this advanced degree may seek employment as:

• Network Security Administrator
• Security Analyst
• Information Security Manager or Engineer
• Information Security Administrator
• Computer Forensics Analyst or Examiner
• Digital Forensics Specialist

Entry Requirements Students entering Computer Information Systems (CIS) programs will need to contact Enrollment Services and take both the English and Math placement tests. Students should bring the results of these tests to their first CIS advising appointment. This degree begins at an advanced level and is designed for students already in the IT field. Conditions of employment in this field may require passing criminal background checks. Students MUST see a CIS faculty adviser for proper placement into this program.

Credit/Grade Requirements This ATA degree is awarded upon completing a minimum of 91 credits of Program Requirements and Electives as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third, whichever is less, of the required credits must have been received from Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.8 within the program requirements.

Career Management Requirement Students obtaining Associate of Technical Arts degrees are required to take at least one credit of career management, which can be satisfied by taking either CIS 116  or CIS 280 .

CWU Transfer This ATA degree transfers directly to Central Washington University’s Bachelors in Information Technology and Administrative Management on the Edmonds Community College campus. Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning,
  • check plans with the appropriate faculty adviser, and
  • see the CIS website to determine when courses are generally offered.

Students completing this degree will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to properly secure desktop systems and servers, and implement the correct security controls for them.
  • Demonstrate the ability to select, configure, and employ the appropriate technical solutions and components for protecting information assets.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute an information security risk analysis, vulnerability assessment and penetration test.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct forensic analysis on various types of computing devices and storage media.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of laws, standards and regulations and their relevance to information security and privacy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of administrative and technical strategies for mitigating and managing threats posed to information systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and practical application of contingency planning, incident response planning, and disaster recovery planning.
