Computer Science/Computer Information Systems - Linux Security Specialist Certificate

The purpose of the Linux Security Specialist Certificate is to prepare students to design, administer, and implement security solutions for Linux hosts and servers. Topics of the program include: secure Linux installation and configuration, performance monitoring, file/process management, trouble-shooting, backup/recovery, command line operations (shell/utilities), scripting (shell/Perl), securing and hardening firewalls, and intrusion detection. Upon completion of this certificate students may be qualified for the following jobs:

• Linux Administrator
• Linux Security Administrator
• Linux Script Programmer
• Linux Network Technician

In addition, students may be able to obtain industry recognized certification in:

• Linux +

Entry Requirements This certificate begins at an advanced level and is designed for students already in the IT networking field. Students MUST see a CIS faculty adviser for proper placement into this program.

Certificate Requirements This certificate is awarded upon a student’s completion of a minimum of 30 credits of Program Requirements as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.8 within the program requirements.

Students planning to continue on to two-year degrees should plan ahead while working toward their certificate. For a smooth transition from certificate to degree, students should see a CIS or CS adviser at their earliest opportunity.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Certificate Outcomes


Students completing this certificate will be able to:

  • Utilize UNIX commands to perform common system operations.
  • Install and change settings for a current version of the Linux operating system.
  • Configure active response mechanisms.
  • Describe Unix/Linux file system and network encryption.
  • Secure Linux services.
  • Perform general configuration of Web, Mail, NFS/SMB, DNS and SSH servers.
  • Manage users, groups RPM software packages, and basic Linux security policies.
  • Secure network services such as Apache, BIND, ProFTP, and securing mail, NTP and DHCP servers.
  • Implement protection of networks/data with IPSec, OpenSSL, OpenSSH and GPG Encryption.
  • Create firewalls using iptables.
  • Use Access Control Lists to set access control.
  • Configure and harden Apache web servers and Samba file servers.
