Fire Officer - Associate of Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description Edmonds Community College has adopted the Washington State Fire Service Education Association Fire Officer AAS-T Degree for delivery to fire service personnel. The degree’s ultimate goal is to provide a higher education program that enables fire departments, in cooperation with Edmonds CC, to develop and support technically competent fire officers highly skilled in their craft and technical arts. This degree articulates to Eastern Oregon University, Western Oregon University, Central Washington’s ITAM degree, City University, and University of Phoenix.
Credit/Grade Requirements This degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 90 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.
Note: Elective courses may be selected with the approval of an FOD program adviser. Other related fire service training may be accepted based upon appropriate documentation.
Work-based learning courses are not required as part of the degree program, however, they are required for IFSAC certification.
Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.
Students are advised to:
- Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
- Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Degree Outcomes
Students completing this degree will be able to:
- Transfer through articulation agreements into the Fire Service Administration programs of Eastern Oregon and Western Oregon Universities. Students of the Edmonds CC program will be able to.
- Assume the role of a company level fire officer including compliance/accountability issues and appropriate supervisory practices employing effective leadership skills, conflict resolution, ethics, and delegation.
- Develop pre-and post-incident strategic and tactical action plans including the fire officer’s role determining fire cause, the investigation process and development/documenting of reports for such incidents.
- Identify fire protection systems used in construction and modifications including sprinkler systems, extinguishing agents, early warning devices as well as action planning and tactical objectives for managing incidents involving hazardous materials.
- Practice the principles of effective risk management during incident operations including managing emergency scene safety with multiple responding units regarding the resources of time, personnel, equipment and jurisdictional authority.
- Describe and apply the codes and ordinances of the International Fire Code (IFC) and International Building Code (IBC) regarding occupancy, adequate exit facilities, installation of fire extinguishers/fire alarm systems, flammable liquids and gases, and general precautions against fire causes.
- Demonstrate instructional methods to meet the psychology of student learning as well as the evaluating of student learning associated with emergency/fire services instruction.
