Social and Human Services - Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency Counseling Certificate

This program of study provides the successful student with the addiction-specific knowledge expected of entry level trainees in drug treatment programs in Washington State. It is one year (approximately) of the minimum two years of education required in WAC 246-811. It satisfies the A-W portion of WAC 246-811 that refers to addiction studies competencies. It is primarily designed for those who already have an Associate’s or higher degree, who seek courses for chemical dependency competency.

Special Note: A Washington State background check is performed on all CDPT applicants. Consult a faculty adviser during your first quarter of classes if this is an issue.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 71 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Certificate Outcomes

Students completing this certificate will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and treatment of chemical dependency, including knowledge of the motivation of change, physiology of addiction and professional issues.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage clinical case management tasks and provide appropriate written documentation as required by state law and various community agencies.
  • Identify and evaluate evidence-based practice methods, including principles, strategies and techniques that can be used to assist consumers in reaching their service goals.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of human development over the lifespan, and its application to services and activities that might be provided to diverse consumer populations.
  • Demonstrate necessary skills for ethical and positive work with consumers, such as communication, group interaction, problem solving, and crisis management techniques.
