This program of study provides the foundation, knowledge and skills to effectively work with individuals and families experiencing difficulties resulting from drug use, misuse or dependency. Successful completion of this degree will enable the graduate to satisfy the State of Washington educational requirements for Chemical Dependency Professionals.

This Associate in Applied Science-T (AAS-T) in Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Counseling is a 106 credit professional technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. In general, professional technical degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities. This degree will articulate to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences at Seattle Central Community College.

Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate of Arts degree  or the Associate of Science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Note: A Washington state background check is required for entrance into this vocation and some limitations are in effect for those with former felony convictions. If you have questions about this, please contact the department adviser or the Department of Health directly.

Credit/Grade Requirements This AAS-T degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 106 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

• Consult with an SHS faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
• Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
• All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to review exact and specific admission requirements.

Note: This requirement planning sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic adviser. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds Community College degree or certificate is ultimately the responsibility of the student.
