BUS 130 - Business Mathematics



5.0 Credits
Instruction and review of basic math functions to prepare students for business classes. Ratio-proportion, percents, estimating, basic algebra, trade/cash discounts, promissory notes, credit terms, and other consumer related activities. Transfer limited. Recommended completion of MATH 47 or PREP 47 or equivalent with a grade of 2.0 or higher, or appropriate score on Math Placement Test, or advisor recommendation. Recommended placement into AENGL 93 or ENGLP 93.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Solve word problems using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  2. Convert fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions; convert fractions and decimals to percent.
  3. Estimate answers by rounding.
  4. Solve equations for unknowns.
  5. Solve word problems using simple algebraic equations.
  6. Using percentages, apply the portion formula to solve business problems.
  7. Calculate single and chain discounts, cash discounts, credit terms, and partial payments.
  8. Calculate markup based on cost and selling price; calculate markdowns.
  9. Using the interest formula, calculate the simple interest and maturity value of financial instruments.
  10. Define promissory notes and calculate interest, discount, and maturity value.
