BUS 130 - Business Mathematics



5.0 Credits
Instruction and review of basic math functions to prepare students for business classes. Topics include simple and compound interest, trade/cash discounts, credit terms, how to read and interpret financial reports, and other business and consumer related activities. Transfer limited. Recommended completion of MATH 47 or PREP 47 or equivalent with a grade of 2.0 or higher, or appropriate score on Math Placement Test, or advisor recommendation. Recommended placement in AENGL 93 or ENGLP 93.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply fractions, decimals, percentages, and equations to solve business-related problems.
  2. Compute single and chain discounts, cash discounts, credit terms, and partial payments.
  3. Determine markup based on both cost and selling price, and calculate markdowns.
  4. Calculate gross pay and standard payroll deductions.
  5. Distinguish between simple and compound interest, and compute each.
  6. Define promissory notes and calculate the interest, discount, and maturity value.
  7. Describe the purpose and key components of a balance sheet and an income statement.
