LEGAL 295 - Advanced Legal Research and Writing
3.0 Credits A systematic study of the advanced legal research and writing methods used by paralegals and other legal professionals, building upon the skills acquired in LEGAL 210. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis of legal authorities, persuasive and objective writing mechanics, and proper legal citation format. Advanced approaches to computer-assisted legal research using Westlaw are also covered. Prerequisite LEGAL 210 with a minimum grade of 2.0. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this advanced course, students will be able to:
- Conduct advanced-level legal research utilizing primary and secondary legal materials, critically analyze complex legal information, and integrate findings into legal documents.
- Formulate precise and effective search queries in computer-assisted legal research databases, including Westlaw, to locate authoritative legal sources.
- Produce advanced legal citations in compliance with professional standards, apply citation-checking techniques, and ensure accuracy and completeness in legal research outputs.
- Apply advanced principles of legal writing, including clarity, cohesion, concision, and plain language, to create professional-level legal documents.
- Differentiate between objective and persuasive legal writing strategies and craft documents that adhere to the appropriate tone, structure, and advanced formatting requirements.
- Manage complex legal research and writing tasks effectively within stringent time constraints, demonstrating high-level organizational, analytical, and drafting skills.
